Microsoft Word: Merging & Protecting

Hello,

I have a document that uses merge fields from an excel spreadsheet as well as drop down menus when the document is protected.

I'm having a conundrum type problem in that I can allow the document to update via the merge process, however it removes my ability to protect the document AND use the drop down menus.

If I protect the document which allows the use of the drop down menus, I can no longer merge the document.

I'm not sure if the problem lies in an order of operations or if there is a security setting somewhere that I am missing.

Under Options->Security Tab, there is a password entered so that when it is opened it can be opened in Read Only.

When the document is opened, it should ask if you want to enter the password or Read-Only. I want users to select Read-Only (since they do not have the password). Next, it should ask if you want to merge (Yes or No). Security Settings for the macro are set to "High", which allows the option for these to run or not.

All of these documents worked previously, but need to be edited to change 2008 to 2009. I have all the necessary passwords.

Anyone have a similar problem or quick fix for this?

Thank you for your help.

Hi PrinceNeptune,

Mailmerge and formfields are essentially incompatible: your document has to be one or the other (though checkbox formfields survive a mailmerge). You would not have been able to combine the mailmerge and formfield arrangement in a previous version of Word, either.

What is it that you're trying to do that you believe requires a document that combines these two document types?

Cheers
