I am trying to work out an easy way to take around a dozen excel files in the same format and import them into a single master sheet, matching the column headings etc. I have tried just using excel formula which is fine but not very automated. Can anybody suggest a VBA approach that might work which I can build off to scale?

There are tons of examples of this that can be found using a simple Google search (i.e. search on "Excel VBA merge multiple Excel files").
If that doesn't do it for you and you need more specific help, you will need to give us more detail to the exact structure of your data files and how you want the final file to look. Most of the time, showing us examples of both is extremely helpful. MrExcel has a tool called “XL2BB” that lets you post samples of your data that will allow us to copy/paste it to our Excel spreadsheets, so we can work with the same copy of data that you are. Instructions on using this tool can be found here: XL2BB Add-in
Note that there is also a "Test Here” forum on this board. This is a place where you can test using this tool (or any other posting techniques that you want to test) before trying to use those tools in your actual posts.
