It's just a safeguard in case somebody accidentality selects "Mark forums read" instead of "Latest activity"

No, there is no need for that. But marking all threads as read is a different matter.

A lot of members use the "New posts" button to see what is current. If you accidentally marked forums as read, you would loose that ability.

No, you can use Back button in browser

Then perhaps it is browser-specific or user-setting specific as it does not work for me.

Posting or editing is different because if you do that by mistake you can edit (or re-edit) your post.
