Mark Areas in Word to Change But Not Print

Is there a way to mark areas in a MS Word document (perhaps with bold, underline, etc.) that a user needs to change each time they use the document for a new customer, but not have that special formating (bold, underline, or whatever) show when printing.

I tried using Track Changes and then changing the "Print What" to document instead of document with tracking, but had mixed results.

There has to be a way (doesnt there?) to mark a Word document so a user can quickly identify the areas that need to be changed (it will be the same areas every time), but not print the markings that indicate to the user what those areas are.

Thanks,

---David

Hi David,

If you're using a B/W printer, you can change Word's compatability settings to print colours as B/W. Then you can make the variable text, say, red, with the rest black. If someone simply overtypes the red text, their new text will also be red.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. We use desktop printers with both color and black ink cartridges.

How does one change the compatability settings to print color as black? That sounds like a good solution. That way the words in red have to be changed each time, but it will appear as black when printed.

Right now, people mark the areas to change in bold, but unfortunately, the bold shows up when printed.

Thanks,

If you go to Format - Font - Text Effects, pick the part you want to be changed, the effect only shows on the screen. The marching ants effect seems to be the least annoying.
