Take geographic data from Excel and plot it as a route in MapPoint. Episode 1154 shows you how.

Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, I'm Bill Jelen.
Basically, you start out with massive amounts of data, and say “How we're going to analyze this?” Well, let's fire up a Pivot table and see if we can solve this problem!

I've gotten a lot of emails from people saying “Where the heck have you been?” I figured this would be a good time to answer that question, we’re going to do it using Microsoft Excel, of course, and Microsoft MapPoint.
So here's a list of cities, we’ll save this and close this, from Excel move over to another cool product that Microsoft puts out called Microsoft MapPoint.
Now I've talked about MapPoint before that.
The key here is, when you go to buy MapPoint, go buy it at eBay, they give this away a lot to IT Managers who go to various conferences, you can usually find it at less than a $100.
So, definitely want to do that, rather than pay the $275 list price.
MapPoint is great because it can take Excel data and plot it on a map, so a great way to visually show data.
So we'll just import all this data, we’ll go with that one, click OK, and then I can choose how I want to show this, so Pushpins, click Next, and we'll go with a red circle, click Finish.
And what it does is, it zooms in to the extent of the data, so from Pennsylvania here, North Carolina here, down to Texas there.
Now, one cool thing we can do is go over to View Map Style, and change this to a Data Map, with a Data Map you get less information there on the roads.
Now, probably have done this before in the podcast, want to do something unusual here.
I'm going to right-click on my pushpins, and say that I want to Add Pushpins as Stops.
And what that does is, it opens up the Route Planner, and you see that we have all of our various items, and it organizes them into the most logical way to do all of those cities.
Well that would be great if, in fact, this was something I was going to do, but instead this is a trip that I've already done.
So I'm going to organize these into the correct sequence, real quick here, and then ask for it to plan a route.
MapPoint is great, it can handle up to 5000 data points, you know, so if you have a list of customers or anything like that, very easy to go through and have all that data up here on a map.
This routing thing’s a little frustrating here, that they don't keep the data in the same order that it originally appeared.
In this case, it's not bad to fix it, certainly, if you had 5000, it would be a royal pain.
There we go, so tell them to Get Directions, and that’ll come up with the extent of this trip, figure out how long it was, how long it'd be to drive, and the whole bit there, letting that to calculate.
Alright, so 3817 miles (7 days, 7 hours, 11 minutes).
