Manipulating Large Data Sets

I normally use data tables to manipulate large data sets in excel but once you start using reasonably complexish formulae it makes the file huge and slows it right down as there are so many calculations to do. Is there a way to store the data in Access and then link from excel and manipulate meaning the large data set is external keeping the size of the excel file down and speeding up the processing? or do i need to be using VBA or SQL?

P.S. I am pretty good with Excel apart from not knowing VBA or SQL yet. feel like i have reached the limits of excel perhaps? I am very willing to start learning both if will help with this problem.

Thanks.
