Mail Merge to Word from Excel - Date formatting incorrect on SOME dates

I am using Office 2010 and have short date formatted columns in Excel and the field code {MERGEFIELD Anticipated_Start_Date \@ "dddd, dd MMMM yyyy"} in Word - yet some of the dates appear in English format and others in American. Absolutely nothing I do is rectifying the problem - any ideas?

Are all the dates in the source data 'real' dates?

Yes, they're all formatted as SHORT DATE and all Excel/Word settings are set to UK date/time format.
Oddly enough, if, in Word, I leave the merge field alone - all dates are correct (UK), they just don't look as nice displayed in a paragraph as 01/05/2017
