This question isn't exactly about Excel but Mr. Excel always gives great answers so I thought I'd try here...

I downloaded an excel file on my gmail account, clicked open, worked on the spreadsheet, hit the save icon, closed the file and now can't find it anywhere. I forgot to do "save as" - my bad - too little sleep and staying up late to work on things... anyway... can anyone tell me where my system may have "saved" the file? FYI...I've done a "search", looked in all "recent documents", all of the usual stuff and can't find it. It was suggested that it was saved in an unusual place with an unusual name as it was a downloaded attachment. Please help!

Thanx!

Who is Mr Spreadsheet?
Author John Walkenbach was Mr Spreadsheet until his retirement in June 2019.
In your browser settings there may be a setting for the default location of downloaded files?

I've done a search on the c drive. I've opend excel options, obtained the name of path where auto saves are supposed to be saved and can't access that path to the file. As I worked on the spreadsheet and clicked the save icon, shouldn't there be a copy somewhere on my computer even as an offline web page? Remember, I didn't "save as", just clicked "save" and then exited the page that was downloaded from gmail. Hate to beg, but someone please help me...

Thanx!

Did you check your browser settings?
You might also try downloading another file, open it and press Save As. The dialog should default to the directory the file is in.

How about going to My Recent Documents, or launching Excel and seeing if the file is in the recent files list?
