Hello,

First time on this site, first post, so bear with me if the proper format is not visible.

My problem / question is this.

I have one workbook with multiple worksheets within it.
In worksheet 1 titled "Assigned Equipment", I have a column identified as "Inventory Number", and the data is a six digit inventory number.

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 52pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=69 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 52pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 2523" width=69><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 93pt; mso-height-source: userset" height=124><TD class=xl65 style="BORDER-RIGHT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-TOP: windowtext 0.5pt solid; BORDER-LEFT: windowtext 0.5pt solid; WIDTH: 52pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: windowtext 0.5pt solid; HEIGHT: 93pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: purple" width=69 height=124>Inventory

This Inventory Number column and data is also duplicated in worksheet 2, titled "Equipment Specifications". In this worksheet 2, there are numerous other columns with data entered, such as "Equip Make", "Equip Model", "Equip Ser Number", etc...

My Goal.

Using worksheet 1, I want to be able to hover over a particular Inventory Number and with whatever formula or function, have that inventory number I am hovering over be searched for in worksheet 2 inventory column. When that number is found, I want a display box, balloon, Msg Box or window of some kind to appear within / ontop of worksheet 1, showing all the specification columns of that item. I would also like to be able to designate which columns would appear in the popup window once the inventory number has been found within worksheet 2.

If this makes sense, does anyone how an idea to what sort of process this novice VBA individual can do to accomplish this? I thought using the LOOKUP function would work but I beleive it only works for looking at one column and getting data of one column identified - usually the next column over.

Any help with this what is probably simple problem and solution, would be greatly appreciated.

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Something like this ... ?
(The worksheet function would be =VLOOKUP(). Please see Excel Help for the usage.)

Brian,

Thank you so much for your reply to my delima. For the most part, your code worked fine, but there is one small matter though of :

Dim MyValue

Just after Set FromSheet = Worksheets("Sheet1") command, there is a line that sets MyValue to any number that I wish.

If I set a number that is in fact within my lookup table, the code goes into the lookup area, the MsgBox is displayed on the screen with the proper inventory information for that specific record.
If I set MyValue number to something that is NOT in the lookup table, then the proper MsgBox "Cannot find " appears, then Exits the macro code.

My question is this? At the top of the procedure, in the Comments area, you indicated that I should select a single cell, then do a Double-click on that cell. I do this yet nothing happens.

I have set a Watch on MyValue to see if that value changes when double-clicking on any given cell inventory number, and it will not change.
I manually have to change that value in the code to get the procedure to work.
I have tried double-clicking varying cells (both in multiple columns and rows) and all I get is the ability to edit that cell.

Other than that little hick-up, your code works perfectly and I am very appreciative of it.

Is there something else that needs to be coded to enable the Double-Click to work, or am I not performing the steps properly?

FYI, I am running Excel 2003 if that affects your coding. I copied your current code into a module all by it lonesome.

I am missing something, just not seeing it right now.

Thanks Again.

Thank you Brian,

I know this must be frustrating but you are dealing with an individual who has had no formal training with VBA at all, all of what I know has come from the web and reading VBA for Dummies on my own time. I hope you will bear with me about this and try to be a bit more specific.

Here is what I tried to do. I tried to copy and paste an image of the Microsoft Visual Basic Project side bars, but am not able to paste them into the threads.

So here is what I can visually see in those project windows.

I have at the top of the Project window an item listed as :
atpvbaen.xls (ATPVBAEN.XLSA)
If I click this project I am presented with a window to enter some sort of password authentication. So I am thinking this is NOT the code module you are referring to.

The next project is :
VBAProject (Installinfo-sample...)
This is the actual name of the file I am working with for this project.

There is another project but for another spreadsheet I currently have open at the moment.

Anyway, under the Installinfo-sample project, there are three yellow folders. The first is:
Microsoft Excel Objects
Under this folder there are four objects, and they are:
Sheet1 (Equipment Specifications)
Sheet11 (NetworkInfo)
Sheet3 (Assigned Equipment)
ThisWorkBook

The second yellow folder is titled Forms, which has under it:
ProgressBar
(This is a form I created for this workbook)

The third yellow folder is Modules, which has the following:
Module1
Module2
Module3

You indicated in your code that :
'- This code goes into the worksheet code module. Right click tab/ View code

I have copied the code throughout the four Microsoft Excel Objects folder, Sheets 1,11,3 and ThisWorkBook.
I have also copied it throughout the three Modules, which I am sure would not make any difference in running your code.

No matter where I copy the code, I click a cell, then Double-Click that cell, I am immediately entered into the editing mode for that cell.

Any help and instructions for this limited end user is greatly appreciated.

I have to offer big apologies :oops:

With code like this I test it in a normal code module before putting it into a worksheet module. I have put the wrong version on the board.

Don't forget to change the sheet name in the code to the one with your lookup table.

This is the correct one which picks up the double click event in the sheet.
It goes into the code module for the worksheet you want to work with, so either get the module using the method mentioned or double click the worksheet name in the VB editor.

Code:
'=============================================================================
'- ACTIVE CELL LOOKUP IN ANOTHER SHEET - FOUND VALUES TO MESSAGE BOX
'- Select a cell and double click
'- This code goes into the worksheet code module. Right click tab/ View code
'- Brian Baulsom May 2010
'=============================================================================
Private Sub Worksheet_BeforeDoubleClick(ByVal Target As Range, Cancel As Boolean)
    Dim MyValue
    Dim FromSheet As Worksheet
    Dim FoundCell As Range
    Dim FromRow As Long
    Dim Msg As String
    '-------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Set FromSheet = Worksheets("Sheet1") ' sheet containing lookup table
    MyValue = Target.Value
    '-------------------------------------------------------------------------
    '- LOOK UP VALUE
    With FromSheet
        Set FoundCell = .Range("A:A").Cells.Find(What:=MyValue, after:=.Range("A1"))
        If FoundCell Is Nothing Then
            MsgBox ("Cannot find " & MyValue)
            Exit Sub
        Else
            FromRow = FoundCell.Row
            Msg = _
              "Manufacture : " & .Cells(FromRow, 2).Value & vbCr _
            & "Equipment Model : " & .Cells(FromRow, 3).Value & vbCr _
            & "Serial : " & .Cells(FromRow, 4).Value & vbCr _
            & "Memory : " & .Cells(FromRow, 5).Value & vbCr _
            & "CDRW/DVD : " & .Cells(FromRow, 6).Value & vbCr _
            & "Additional : " & .Cells(FromRow, 7).Value
            rsp = MsgBox(Msg, vbOKOnly, " INVENTORY " & MyValue)
        End If
    End With
    '------------------------------------------------------------------------
End Sub

Brian,

Thank you so much for the updated code. It worked perfectly.
With just a few minor tweaks and formatting changes, your code has saved me hours of aggravation and heartburn.

I will be sitting down with my co-workers and supervisor on Monday to demo some other code I have incorporated into our spreadsheet, but I will also show your new feature as well.

Again, thanks for the terrific help.
