Hi.

I´m trying to create a list from the validation menu but I don´t want to have the items for the list in any cell. Is it possible to create the list without using any cells, (for example, creating a name that stores the list and then using it)? How could I do that if it is possible?

I have try to do it many ways but haven´t been able to, thought I think it must be possible.

mjrofra,

Click on "Data", "Validation..."

On the "Settings" tab, "Allow:" should say "List"

In the box below "Source:"

type in "Stan,Peter, mjrofra" without the " characters

and click on the "OK" button.

Didn´t think that was so easy .

Thank you hiker95.

It's easy, but not as robust as putting the list in some cells (you could hide the column or even put the list in another sheet).

It may not matter in your circumstance, but if you set up Data Validation this way (with the list hiker95 suggested) then try manually typing, say, 5 spaces followed by 'Peter' in the cell. The Data Validation will allow that entry when (in my opinion anyway) it shouldn't. It could cause problems later on if you were, for example, using a formula to count how many times 'Peter' had been entered.

Data Validation set up this way will allow any number of spaces before or after any 'valid' value.
