links not updating after idle time on open files

File 1 is the source and file 2 is the destination file. I have used the copy and pastelink into file 2 from file one. Both files are on a server on my network. I open the source file (file1) on my laptop, then open the destination file on my desktop. After I make changes to the source file I save it. Then I tell the destination file to update links by using the EDIT LINKS option on the DATA ribbon and UPDATE VALUES . At first it worked great the first half an hour. Both files open at the same time on different computers. Changes made on file one on the laptop and saved where updated on 2 after updating the Destination file links. I left the files open but there was no activity for about 45 minutes on either file no updates to data no saves to the source file still open. After this 45 minute pause in activity I made changes to the source file saved it then tried to refresh the links and no data was update. I tried again to refresh the links and still no data update. I closed the destination file then reopened it and the links ask if I wanted to update the links and I responded yes. The links began working again. Question is there a time out for the connections on linked sheets that caused the linkage to stop responding to the update request?? When I use the EDIT LINKS I select the link from the list and UPDATE VALUES and the link path shows OK. It’s as if the source file stopped giving out the data when requested!
Using Excel 2016, The Laptop is a MACBOOK the Desktop is a PC. Is this a possible cause?
