Linking spreadsheets?!?

OK im half way there.

I have in my Word document my excel spread sheet, and on the 2nd page i have a 'paste special', 'paste link', 'picture' spreadsheet (copy of the first)
The whole reason is because i want the second to update itself if i do anything to the first one BUT...

as soon as i exit that document and go back into it the link between those spreadsheets seems to be broken?

Have i done the whole process wrong, or is there just some other option that needs to be enabled or taken into account?

I thought it was:

Insert ... | Object | Create From File | Link to File (checkbox)
