Linked Workbooks problems

I hope someone can help me with a couple linked workbook problems that are being very persistent.

1st. I have one workbook that uses a sumif statement to pull values from a second workbook and fill in the approriate cells. This workbook used to run fine but all of a sudden it is requiring me to have the 2nd workbook open before it will grab the data. I have not changed the formula in any way. Any idea's why Excel is doing this? I am using excel XP btw.

2. I have a similar problem with another workbook. I have linked the two together. It basically allows me to auto fill in customer name address etc... based on customer ID and it references the customer master list spreadsheet. This is al being done by a vlookup function at present. Until recently this worked well but lately I excel is forcing me to manauly update the link everytime I use the formula. The address and name of the workbook have not changed. When I check to make sure the workbooks are linked together through the edit links dialog box it says the source is good.

Is there something I am missing here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
