LINEST, Conditional ARRAY ???

See data below. 100 is in cell A3 and 21 is in cell C13.

I’m trying to return the slope for each “TYPE”. The LINEST function would appear appropriate coupled with conditional statements in the Known Ys and Known Xs all wrapped in array. The formula for the slope for TYPE 100 in cell F3 is
<o:p> </o:p>
“=LINEST(IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$B$3:$B$13),IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$C$3:$C$13))”
<o:p> </o:p>
followed by CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. This formula does not return the slope and I’m not sure why. The same concept in the formula is entered for the Y-Intercept for Type 100 in cell G3 as
<o:p> </o:p>
“=INTERCEPT(IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$B$3:$B$13),IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$C$3:$C$13))”
<o:p> </o:p>
followed by CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER. This formula works just fine. Can anyone help me figure out the LINEST formulas in column F?<o:p></o:p>

Excel Facts

Why does 9 mean SUM in SUBTOTAL?
It is because Sum is the 9th alphabetically in Average, Count, CountA, Max, Min, Product, StDev.S, StDev.P, Sum, VAR.S, VAR.P.
Try...

=LINEST(N(OFFSET($B$3:$B$13,SMALL(IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,ROW($A$3:$A$13)-ROW($A$3)),ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COUNTIF($A$3:$A$13,$E3)))),0,1)),N(OFFSET($C$3:$C$13,SMALL(IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,ROW($A$3:$A$13)-ROW($A$3)),ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COUNTIF($A$3:$A$13,$E3)))),0,1)))

...confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.

Another option:

=SLOPE(IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$B$3:$B$13),IF($A$3:$A$13=$E3,$C$3:$C$13))

...confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.

Remark:

The Linest() function returns both the slope and the intercept. If you use Domenic's formula you don't need the Intercept() formula.

Try the follwing:

- Select F3:G3
- enter Domenic's formula in the formula bar and press CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER

you'll get both values in the cells.

Remark 2:

If the result is undefined, like for type 600 where you have one only point and so you can't calculate the statistics, Linest() will return 0 for the slope while Slope() returns #DIV/0!

Domenic has a GREAT solution. I can kinda see how it works and can test that it does indeed work, but would someone care to explain why it works so I can apply more broadly to other data sets? I see that the formula creates a new, smaller array with only the relevant data, but I can't think through it well.

I don't understand the offset part in particular. Can someone just explain this, please? If I understand this part I can get all the rest.

Basically, this part of the formula...

SMALL(IF($A$4:$A$14=$E4,ROW($A$4:$A$14)-ROW($A$4)),ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COUNTIF($A$4:$A$14,$E4))))

...is used to return an array of numbers, which feeds the second argument of OFFSET. In turn, OFFSET returns an array of references. Whenever we have an array of references, we need to de-reference/make the values available. One way to do this is by using the 'N' function. With that, an array of values is returned. So, let's assume that A4, A8, and A12 contains the value in E4. Here's how the following part of the formula is evaluated...

SMALL(IF($A$4:$A$14=$E4,ROW($A$4:$A$14)-ROW($A$4)),ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&COUNTIF($A$4:$A$14,$E4))))

SMALL(IF({TRUE;FALSE;FALSE;FALSE;TRUE;FALSE;FALSE;FALSE;TRUE;FALSE},{0;1;2;3;4;5;6;7;8;9}),ROW(INDIRECT("1:"&3)))

SMALL({0;FALSE;FALSE;FALSE;4;FALSE;FALSE;FALSE;8;FALSE},{1;2;3})

{0;4;8}

...which, as I've already mentioned, is fed to the second argument of OFFSET.

This thread has been dormant for years. But this has been a very helpful thread. Not sure how to use Domenic formula for multiple independent variables? I've adjusted the formula several ways, but unsure how to get it to capture multiple "known x's" in the Linest function. Anyone?

I will work off the existing example for simplicity.

The existing sample has 1 dependent variable and 1 independent variable. Then he calculates LINEST function based on the conditions/categories {100, 200, 300, etc.}.

I am looking to have the 1 dependent variable and 2 independent variables. Then calculate LINEST function based on the conditions/categories.

I've tried tampering with the formula in several ways, none of which worked. :(
