Hello
I was just wondering if anyone in the UK knows of any good online courses or distance learning courses that cover basic preogramming. I am 24 and work full time so unfortunetly cant attend university, although this is a subject that i am very interesting in getting involved in.

many Thanks

Hi
Before you commit to a course, you could try an introductory guide to VB or something similar - for example, see here. The knowledge or techniques learned on one programming language are often transferrable to other programming languages (syntax aside). The advantage with something like this is that that you can 'try before you buy' at your own pace but also experiment with a programming language before committing to / specialising in it. Did you have any applications or progamming languages in mind?

Hi Dave

Hope this isn't too off-topic for you, but I agree with Andrew93 about the general portability of programming languages (I think VBA is a useful place to start if only because so many people use it - ie those who use it at work/home etc for Excel/Access).

If I could recommend one book to give you a feel for programming, it would, however, be this:

Beginning Java Objects
2nd Edition
Jacquie Barker
Apress Publishing

Deals with Java, however, it explains *superbly* Object Oriented programming concepts (I bought the 2000 first Wrox edition about 7 months ago, and literally couldn't put it down, it was so interesting. Subsequently, I bought the edition above).

Good luck!

Richard
