I just enrolled in a spreadsheet class being taught in Windows 07. I am trying to do this with Mac 08. So far the inconsistencies are minor but I'm wondering if it might just be better to learn in Windows. Considering it might be better to know Windows for jobs, I still don't want to invest in the Microsoft OS and Windows Office, and then clutter my Mac with them. Can anyone advise me which would be best? Do the differences become so much that I will have preferred learning Windows?

Mac Office 2008 does not support macros (VBA) at all. It's also somewhat different in terms of the user interface and, in my experience, even more buggy where charts are concerned than Office 2007.
In terms of formulas though, they are pretty much the same.

Ok, I think I can get by w/ the user interface differences but what are the macros (VBA) used for?

VBA is used for automating any repetitive tasks (on a Mac you would have to learn and use Applescript instead) and writing your own functions.

Thank you for the info. For now I think I'm gonna try getting through this on my Mac and just get a good Mac Excel book.

So I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly but...

I'm trying to figure out the formula for the percent of change as in, from the grade on one exam to the next. Are formulas different on a Mac?

Welcome to the Board!

Formulas should be the same although some add-ins like the Analysis Toolpak may not be included.

For the % change formula you can use:

=(B1/A1)-1

Where A1 is grade 1 and B1 is grade 2.

Thanks bunches! I ended up using =(current-past)/current

Does anyone know if there is a shortcut to move Home (A1) on Mac?
