Is VBA suited for this?

I may need to write a program which analyzes variable length records to the bit level and transforms that data into something more readable, which I then will input to Excel and perform more tasks on it, using Excel/VBA.

Not having more than a working knowledge of VBA for Excel, I wonder if it is suited for this bit-digging business or should I use another language for this which I would first have to learn from scratch? IdeallyI would just dig deeper into VBA rather than get into something completely new for me.

Note: Having been a (computer) hardware guy all my life I don´t know any programming languages besides limitd VBA (self-taught).
