Irritating Powerpoint file opening type thing

PowerPoint 2000 (@ work)

Why is it, that the File Open dialog box always seems to default to Preview mode? It's very annoying, because as soon as i switch to my favourites, it tries to preview my html shortcuts, which locks up powerpoint whilst it tries in vain to preview it.

how can i set the default view to List or Details View??
