Running Excel 97 on Win98SE. I can open Excel but if I try to type anything in a cell, I get this error message. I have spreadsheets that were previously created that I try to open and I get this same error message. So basically, all I can do is open Excel but I cannot do anything with it. I tried to reinstall MS Office (didn't uninstall but put the CD in and selected the 'reinstall' option), then rebooted, and Excel still doesn't work.

The Register info changes slightly each time it happens. Here are 2 copies of the error:

Excel Facts

What is the last column in Excel?
Excel columns run from A to Z, AA to AZ, AAA to XFD. The last column is XFD.
In the absence of another reply ....
AFAIK this is a system error rather than Excel caused by a problem with memory access (trying to access an area already in use).

You could try re-registering (closed) Excel from the desktop via
1. Start/Run/type 'excel.exe /unregserver' (no quotes)/OK
2. Start/Run/type 'excel.exe /regserver' (no quotes)/OK
may need to type the full path to excel.exe.

Try a Google search for "EXCEL caused an invalid page fault" or similar.
