indirect and > or <

i am setting up a report where the user can set certain inputs. These are then used to highlight entries in a report. How can i get something like indirect to bring each of the values from the input cells into my report? as an example:

A1=6
A2=<
A3=8

I can get the value for a1 and the value for a2 but cannot get the comparator (<) into the evaluation.

any suggestions??
