INDEX.MATCH w/ Substrings and Dynamic Range

Hello everyone,

Goal: I am trying to find 2 substrings ("sensor", "speed") in separate columns (cat1, cat2) located within ±2 rows from a given row. If the substrings are found, return a value from another column (areacode) and finally write "X" if all of the above is successful.

For example, with the data below I can successfuly implement this formula (confirmed w/ ctrl+shift+enter) in cell D5 where "X" is indeed returned:

=IF(INDEX(A3:A7, MATCH("*sensor*speed*", B3:B7 & C3:C7, 0)) = A5, "X", "")


Problem: the given row (5 in this case) is unknown. The formula should therefore use some sort of dynamic range.. Unfortunately, the following doesn't work..

=IF(INDEX(ADDRESS(ROW() - 2, 1) & ":" & ADDRESS(ROW() + 2, 1), MATCH("*sensor*speed*", (ADDRESS(ROW()-2, 2) & ":" & ADDRESS(ROW()+2, 2)) & (ADDRESS(ROW()-2, 3) & ":" & ADDRESS(ROW()+2, 3)), 0)) = ADDRESS(ROW(), 1), "X", "")


Any ideas on how to elegantly resolve this, ideally without using UDF or VBA?

The newer CONCAT function can reference a range of cells. =CONCATENATE(A1,A2,A3,A4,A5) becomes =CONCAT(A1:A5)
