I have what must be a very simple problem,
But whose solution eludes me.

It involves the INDEX function

Cell C1 has value 10
cell d1 =index(a1:c5,1,3) which will return the Value in cell c1 (10)


cell e1= index(a1:c5,0,3)
cell f1= index(a1:c5,,3)

e1 and f1 will both return a Reference to cell c1
I get #Value in both e1 and f1
(presumably this is what you get when you just get a reference to a cell)


How do I go from a reference to cell c1 to its value.

When I tried your formulas they all returned the value in C1. But the last 2 formulas return a reference to C1:C5, of which only the value in the first cell is returned.
