Index and Match problems with sorting

When I use Index and match (instead of Vlookup) and sort the data, the row references do not automatically update (as they would in vlookup). This makes the function, IMHO, far less than useful. Why, why why does it do this and what can I do to make it stop?

I have heard so much about the benefits of using Index/Match but no one has mentioned that you can't sort your data after using it. It's back to VLookup for me, unless someone can help me with this. BTW I have tried Googling this problem and have found lots of others with the same dilemma and no practical solution.

If you can't trust that your formulas will remain stable, then why would you use this function?
