Increment last return row by 1

Hi all the title does not describe well what I am struggling with.

I have to return a value from a different sheet i.e =sheet1 A1 into sheet 2 A1.
The 2nd row of sheet 2 (A2) needs to duplicate what was in sheet 2 A1.
The 3rd row of sheet 2 (A3) needs to return the value in sheet 1 A2.
The 4th row of sheet 2 (A4) needs to duplicate sheet 2 A3.

Then be able to be pulled down thousands of rows.

Formula in Sheet1 A1 copied down
=INDEX(Sheet2!A$1:A$1000,INT((ROWS(A$1:A1)-1)/2)+1)

I switched sheet 2 &1 but after, worked perfectly!!
