The calculation 2/612 ought to give 0.003267 as the answer however Excel 2003 formula =2/612 showing 0.25 formatted to 2 decimal places as the answer. How is this possible and how can it be solved?

It's weird, but with 2 decimal places, you should expect 0.00, not the real answer. What happens if you choose 6 decimals?
Try using another cell in another sheet.

Worf, I should have added that the answer was multiplied by 100. The same calculation on a different work sheet gives the correct answer. It appears to be that it is only on this specific worksheet that it is coming up as 0.25!

I was thinking along the lines that this worksheet has been formatted somehow to give this answer. I can't prove that however.

I agree that something is off with the cell/worksheet. If you press Control+1 to format the cell, can you alter the outcome?

I can ammend the formula but the outcome is always the same 0.00245 or 0.25

What does Ctrl+1 does? I have used Excel 2007 to open the file and it is the same result either way.

Control+1 is the shortcut to open the Format Cells dialog box, at least in Excel 07.
Can you just use another cell or worksheet,or try to delete whatever is at the problematic cell and start over?
