incorrect date format in historical stock chart

Thank you for your time. I have downloaded the historical data for the Dow index and have been plotting certain time periods to study in excel2010. The data that I downloaded has date, open, high, low, close, and volume.

When I create a chart to show the above data using Insert>Other Charts>Stock Charts>Vol Open High Low Close, the x axis shows the date but not correctly. For example, for the time period of Aug 15, 1955 to Dec 1, 1955, the chart shows the date as if it were beginning of the year 2000. I have though about changing the format of the date data from "Date" to General and subtracting a number that would force the data to be lower thereby fooling excel into showing the "correct" date. But before I do that, I wanted to see if there are other suggestions out there.
