Importance of Pagefile.sys

I have been performing a lot of query processing on my PC (512 RAM) with a very large DB (Over 500MB compressed and grows to 800MB after processing several months of updates....). I was deleting large files from my device when I noticed that my pagefile.sys was over 700MB. This file was never large enough for me to notice so I assume it grew during the processing. I also received all kinds of memory errors, which may or may not be related....

Is it normal for this system file to be this large? Does it cause issues? Suggestions for proceeding are appreciated.
