When I import a text file, there is a question mark that appears in a cell but not in the original text file. Also, it combines the text in in one cell when it should be in two separate columns. The first line in the picture is correct. The second line in the picture is wrong.

Is there a setting in excel to not show the question mark in the cell when importing the file?

Thank you and I appreciate any advice given.

Prevent GETPIVOTDATA. Select inside a PivotTable. In the Analyze tab of the ribbon, open the dropown next to Options and turn it off
Hell omeprazole,

What character should be displayed in place of the question mark?

Hi Leith,

Thanks for the reply. There isn't suppose to be anything in place of the question mark. It seems for just that one row, the text in columns A and B are included in column A. Everything after column A shifts to the left so the text that is suppose to be in Column C goes into Column B.

In the raw text file, there is an extra space after W20161021002 so I think excel thinks there is suppose to be like a character there.

Hello omeprazole,

It would help to see the complete text file. Can you post a copy to file share site and post the link?

Thanks again for your time on this subject. I think i solved the problem.

I guess when I imported the file the first time, file origin was 936 : Chinese Simplified so the text looked like W20161021002?ANX9807BN-AA-T

When I used 437:OEM United States file origin it looked like W20161021002á

I used file origin Windows (ANSI) and it looks like how I want it to look.

just in case you can answer a question, below is a dropbox link.

there is a space after W20161021002 in the text file which can result in a different character showing up when importing into excel.

Do you have an idea why excel would think the space is a character?
