if text matches

I am trying to write a formula that if text matches that from a list in one cell that the result in another cell replies with text from another list ex.

if sheet1 a1 contains = junior
and hello is in a list on sheet 2 a1
then sheet1 b1 replies with jr
from list on sheet 2 b1

im trying to use set field values that another program is looking for ex jr and the spreadsheet i have has junior

Would putting =VLOOKUP(Sheet1!A1, Sheet2!$A:$B, 2, False) in Sheet1!A2 do what you want?
