hi all, i am trying to work out a way of counting unique/distinct names in a list. Unfiltered is straightforward. In each row: countif($a$2:$a2,$a2). I need to be able to have a formula that will also operate on the same data when it is filtered. I aim to be able to identify distinct names by year as well as overall.

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
thanks footoo. I have seen this one before. I am actually trying to mark each record or row of my list in the last column, as opposed to counting the total of all rows.

the aim is to then use the tabular data in a pivot. the pivot table will be filtered for distinct names in a particular year, per category, etc
