Identify Data Source Update Complete

Is there a way to identify when a data source has completed updating? We have a lot of processes that are sequential and require a data source to be update prior to running the next step in the process. Currently, we are basically, hitting one button and waiting the source data to update, then hitting the next button to start the next part of the process. However, if there was a way to identify when the source "completed" the update and then told excel to wait for that instance then continue. We have gone down many avenues, including pretty in-depth VBA and still do not have a good/usable solution.

Excel Facts

Format cells as currency
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+4 to format cells as currency. (Shift 4 is the $ sign).
what is 'data source', and how do data sources update?

if they are some sort of query, (via VBA) explicitly update them sequentially, and be sure that backgroundquery = false

that setting should ensure that no process start until the update of a query is done
you could throw in a DoEvents 'just in case'

if the queries cascade, be sure to have them in the correct sequence

basic idea being like below, (pseudo code)
datasource_1.refresh backgroundquery:=false
doevents
datasource_2.refresh backgroundquery:=false
doevents
datasource_3.refresh backgroundquery:=false

if this isn't helpful, then please provide some details of the setup as it isn't clear, to me at least

if there is in depth VBA, consider posting it

regards

PS, if it is an OLAP query, they can not be refreshed in the background AFAIK
