Read Lamb (the Gospel According to Biff, Jesus' Childhood Pal) by Christopher Moore. There aren't many books out there that have made me laugh out loud, but this one did. Frequently.

Ooooh, Ohhhh, I know! Does Hillary Clinton have anything out?

Seriously, for a good bore, Guns, Germs & Steel, by Jared Diamond is very interesting, but I got turned off by how much an historian brings himself into the picture. It won a Pulitzer which should have had me doubt buying it to begin with.

The Prize (about the oil industry), by Daniel Yergin is great, but it's been years since I read that one, so it might be a bit outdated. It won a P, but rated it.

Wars of the Irish Kings, by David Willis McCoullough is great if you're Irish, bad if you're boss is Eyetalian and sitting next to you on the plane.

I settled on Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series, and Vince Flynn's stuff. Great airport/plane reading and they're available in most airports around here. Stephen Coonts is decent too. They're up-to-date Ludlum-ish, but not as good as the old ones.

The only problem with the latter is that I've generally read over half by the time we land and we're only talking San Diego to San Jose), then I have nothing for the hotel. The good thing is it irritates the hell out of the boss because he can't read, and Cyndi has a stack to keep her awake at night while I'm gone. (Ummm, yeah, I read a bit fast).

Beats the hell out of the Oracle Browser 2.0 User's Guide I've been putting off...I wasn't fond of Ellison's work before this...

If all else a good bible works. I look for the Escort Service numbers written in the Gideon's. ;)

Hi smokenack

I really like anything by Ken McClure (http://www.kenmcclure.freeuk.com), medical thrillers, fiction based on real life information - that said I did find Past Lives, his latest, a little disappointing.

I also like novels by Ben Elton. His early work can be a little bit rambling, but his fourth book onwards seemed to drop that - Past Mortem is particularly excellent.

My other pick would be The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year) by Mark Haddon. I liked it that much that I've just bought his second novel A Spot of Bother, but not read it yet.

I settled on Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series
I also like these (watch out for the author's guest apearances) as well as his Kurt Austin series, but they can be a bit formulaic once you've read a dozen... :-D I'm thinking of reading some more in the series, but I can't remember which I've read and which I haven't!
