Hey everyone,

I've been elected to give a 1 hour long workshop-type presentation on Intermediate Excel.

I was wondering if you guys have any good suggestions on what topics I should cover -- since I only have 1 hour.

Are there any good books you recommend, that I could pull training modules out of?

Thanks so much for your help.

Excel Facts

Control Word Wrap
Press Alt+Enter to move to a new row in a cell. Lets you control where the words wrap.
Things like VLOOKUPs, Subtotals and Pivot Tables, and using the Macro Recorder to do some very basic VBA (for things things such as formatting) may be some good topics to cover.

SUMIF and SUMPRODUCT gets my vote for formulas. I think Pivot Tables is a very useful topic to go over. I don't think in an hour there's any point introducing people to VBA (if they have no knowledge/experience with this already).

Things may have changed a bit as it's been a few years since work sent me on an intermediate Excel course but my suggestions would be:

- Subtotals
- Charts
- Pivot Tables/Charts
- IF statements
- Autofilter
- COUNTIF/SUMIF (maybe)

To be honest it all depends on your audience.

On the intermediate level course I was on conditional formula weren't even mentioned and, whilst I didn't come away from the course learning much at all, there were folk who struggled with what we did cover.

I could spend and hour explaining Sumproduct to some of the 'intermediate' users at work and they still wouldn't really get it.

You'll struggle to cover more than five or six functions in an hour if there's any audience participation.

Hope it goes well.

This thread may help give you some ideas:

But, as Dom said, it will depend on your audience.

You might also consider sending Aladin (Aladin Akyurek) a PM. I think his real job (as opposed to his volunteer job on this board) is to teach intermediate Excel courses. Maybe you can borrow one of his lesson plans? :-)

One hour is a really short time. I would teach them the best keyboard shortcuts (and make a cheat sheet to hand out to everybody). This will give them some real value.
