how to make text to represent a value in cells

Hi I forgot how I did this long time ago. I need to type short letters like wd, nb, ro, c, b, st in the various cells and it needs to represent a value such as c=-5, nb=2. So at the end I can get the total into different cell/column.

Hi there,
the easiest way is to duplicate this setup and use VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP to replace the text values with the ones from the little table you have in X2:Y7 and do a simple SUM. Trying to do a range text-to-value conversion inside a SUM makes the formula way too complicated.
