How to Create Summary Page From Multiple Sheets in Multiple Books? (Excel 2003)

I'm looking for assistance in creating a monthly summary page of the same cells from different worksheets (Sheet1!D25, Sheet3!D26) from different workbooks (June 1/11, June 2/11) all in the same folder. The cell Sheet1!D25 is the sum of a list, if that matters. Each workbook corresponds to one day of the month.

The summary page would look like this with a row for each day of the month (sorry but I can't download the html maker at work ):

So, on the summary page "Total 1" would include the info in Sheet1!D25 for June 1/11, and "Total 2" would include the info in Sheet3!D25 for June 1/11, etc. In addition, on the summary page June 2/11 would list the same info, and so on for the entire month.

I would appreciate any help if there is a way to accomplish this more efficiently on Excel 2003?

John_w: Thank you very much. I can see from the code you kindly provided me, it is wayyyy over my head.

I have a couple of questions:

1. I copy and pasted but I get "macros are disabled because the security level is set to high" when I run it even though I set the security on low?

2. folderPath = "C:\Excel\June\"

The folder in question is a shared folder on the network that contains the files in question. Should I not change this line in your code to:

folderPath = "S:\VOL_Shared\GS\G S\1 Daily Finance\June 2011" ?

After I closed the workbook and reopened it, the macro disabled issue is resolved, and I was able to run the macro.

However, for some reason, no dates or numbers are populating, just the column headers. I tried it with folderPath = "C:\Excel\June\" and the way I posted it in my previous post.

I run the macro and I get just a finished message box with the hourglass icon like it's processing, but since I get the finished message, it's probably done?

Yes, hence the comment CHANGE AS REQUIRED above that line. Note that the code checks whether the folder path has a trailing slash and adds it if it is missing - the line If Right(folderPath, 1) <> "\" Then folderPath = folderPath & "\".

Yes, the MsgBox "Finished" is the last line of code so it must have got there after looping through all the workbooks (*.xls) in the folder. I don't know why no dates or numbers are populating. I tested the code and it works fine on my local files.

Add the following statement immediately after the dayNumber = Day(workbookDate) line:

        MsgBox "Workbook file = " & folderPath & fileName & vbNewLine & _
            "Date = " & workbookDate & vbNewLine & _
            "Day of month = " & dayNumber

The message displayed should prove whether or not the code is finding the correct workbooks and correctly parsing each file name as a date and the day of month (dayNumber) of that date. The dayNumber (1 to 30 for June) is used as a row offset from cell A1.

If the message indicates otherwise, try debugging the code by stepping through it line by line by pressing F8 in the Visual Basic editor.

John_w: After changing the folderpath, and entering the code you provided, the code is partly working (I also removed the code for 'Total 3' which is actually just meant to sum Total 1 and Total 2). It is successful in pulling and populating the totals for June 4-June 8 but not for any other days (still very exciting!). This is weird because the files for each day use the same template.

I'm getting a Run-time error '13' when running it. From what I can google, the formatting of the cell may be an issue which doesn't make sense to me because why would it work for some days and not others? The cells that I'm trying to pull data, D25, has a sum formula in it if it matters.

I can see from your code that the line with an issue in it has to do with parsing the workbook date. The dates of the files follow this type of format, 1 June 2011. I think I may have incorrectly said in my first post that the dates of the files were June 1-11. I doubt it makes a difference now that I think about it since some of the files vary: 4 June 11, 7 June 2011, 9 June2011. Clearly the code accounts for variations in filenames. I'm pretty confused.

This is the line which is highlighted when debugging:

workbookDate = CDate(Left(fileName, InStr(fileName, ".") - 1))

John_w: I went back and changed the filename for '9 June2011' to '9 June 2011' and it worked perfectly!

I'm glad that you quickly spotted the problem with the inconsistent file name. The CDate function can interpret many different expessions as a date, but the lack of a month-year separator in 'June2011' made it fail.

Hope you managed to learn some VBA programming from this exercise.
