How to calcualate the number of days passed in a column after date set in another column

Here is the scenario:

I have Column A that holds the date and Column B that shows many days have passed since that day in Column A passed.

For example - if the date in Column A is 7/1/2010, Column B shows 8 because a total of 8 days passed from the value in Column A up to today's date (7/2/2010)

=TODAY() - A1

Is there a way to set that formula such that it updates today's automatically? So that calculation in column B keeps getting updated.

New scenario -

Column A has the stored date when the issue was open: 7/1/2010
Column B has the stored date for when the issue was closed: 7/10/2010
Column C has calculates the number of days that passed until a value was entered in Column B.

1) The TODAY() function updates itself every time the sheet calculates. This is already happening.

2) =IF(B1="", TODAY() - A1, B1 - A1)
