please can you be more specific on your method - what rules do you want to apply? e.g. do you want some weighting such that the preference is worth 50%, and the score is worth 50%?

Hey, am sorry for not being specific. What i need is to create a list of all the six streams and allocate students in each stream first based on their scores and then based on their preferred choice say for e.g. under Mktg we should allocate all students A to G based on their scores and their preferences. no weightages are being assigned.

Am i clear now ?

for example,

are you saying you simply want to group together any student who has a score in, or a preference for, any subject?

or do you want to rank them first by score, and then by preference?

i.e. are you actually asking an Excel question, or a process question?

Either way, I would suggest you investigate Pivot Tables, as I think these might be what you are looking for. There is a lot of info on this board about these, or you might also try http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/pivots.htm
