For years, in my personal budget spreadsheet, I have listed a budget amount for a category and the actual amount spent. If the amount spent went over, I use conditional formating to color the number magenta.
I've never really liked this as it looks too much like a negative number, is not too obvious when printed out in black and white, and looks terrible if I make the alternating rows light green instead of gray.
I've dabbled with some ideas of putting an up arrow next to the number.
Is there a standard accounting way to display if a line item has gone over?
Thanks,
Mike
