How do I convert 1,000,000 into 1M?

I thought I would put my question in the subject line to make it easier to answer.

I have large Market Cap numbers such as 2,500,000,000 and I would like them to be easier to read. So 2,500,000,000 could look like 2.5B or 2,500M something like that. I am sure there is a simple formula for this, but can't find it quickly..

Use custom number formats (press CTRL + 1 to bring up the format cells dialog box, choose the number tab, and click "custom" on the left side). Under "Type" enter one of these:

#,##0.00,,,"B" for Billions with two decimals
#,##0.0,,"MM" for Millions with one decimal
#,##0,"K" for Thousands with no decimals

If you're interested in combining all 3 cell formatting rules, you can use this:

[>=1000000000]#,##0.00,,,"B";[>=1000000]#,##0.00,,"M";#,##0.00,"K"
