How can i make Microsoft Excel be opened by a different program?

How can i make Microsoft Excel be opened by a different program? I run EnRoute software and Shopbot software for cnc routing applications. These programs gather times and other data i would like to automatically transfer to Excel, without me doing anything to open Excel.
If a VBA is the answer please provide a short explanation about what it does and a step by step instruction on how to implement it.

I would output your data to a text file (such as csv files or tab-delimited files. Excel can open and read such data without difficulty.
