how can I count the amount of cells with a letter in it, whilst only counting ones from France on the left column.

I can get it to count the total amount which would be 4 columns with letters in

but I can't get it to just have France's count which would be 2.

I want to use a formula rather than a filter.

Links? Where??
If Excel says you have links but you can't find them, go to Formulas, Name Manager. Look for old links to dead workbooks & delete.
Example:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A6="France"),--(B1:B6="A"))

The criteria "France" and "A" can be references to cells that contain those values.

If you have Excel 2007+ and
- if you want to count if anything is in column B next to France, try
=COUNTIFS(A1:A10,"France",B1:B10,"<>")

- if you do only want to count 'A's in column B with France then try
=COUNTIFS(A1:A10,"France",B1:B10,"A")
