Home Network headache

I have been trying to set up a wireless home network for the last 2 days with Lynksys 802.11g in order to use my laptop from another room in the house to get on the internet and see files on my desktop computer. After talking with a Linksys employee in India twice, the two computers are actually communicating with eachother (found out by pinging). Now I can look at shared files from my laptop on my desktop computer but I can't see any shared files from my desktop on my laptop. When I ask to see computers in my workgroup, only the laptop shows up. When I try to run the Network Setup Wizard on my desktop again to add the desktop to the workgroup it says "Other computers cannot connect to the Internet through this computer. In addition to its internet connection, this computer must have a connection to your network. Both computers have the same workgroup name and the desktop is attached to the router and the router is attached to the cable modem.
Can anyone please help me???? I'm ready to give up on the whole thing!! Thanks, Slink

Do you have a software firewall installed such as norton?

also try removing wireless from the picture and see if you problem still exists, do this by setting up a wired network with a hub, if you dont have one you can either buy one as they are quite cheap or maybe borrow one from a friend.

when you are fault finding you need to test each component of the system seperatly to find where your probelm lays (it could be software, it could be the wireless, it could be the router) when we know what it is I may be able to help

Hi Rocky, Thanks for the reply. I did have Norton Antivirus and Firewall which was packaged with the router (beats me why they would send along a program that makes the router not work!) and I removed Norton from both my computers and downloaded a virus software that was recommended by a guy from Circuit City. I also replaced my modem (not the problem though), replaced the router (not the problem though) and then finally gave up on the whole thing and brought everything back to the store. Then I bought a D-Link notebook wireless adapter so that I could use the wireless internet that was available while I was on vacation and that worked perfectly :)
I'm thinking of buying a router from D-Link and seeing if that would work but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
When I did a trouble shooter online, it said that the green light under the internet label on the router should not be blinking, yet mine was blinking. The trouble shooter said that I had to install a switch between the router and modem because the modem must not be compatible with the router. I went to buy the switch, but the guy at Circuit City said that he has never seen a Motorola modem not be compatible with a Linksys router.
Does any of this set off any ideas you might have for me?
I'll have to see if I can borrow a hub from someone.
Thanks for your help, Slink
