In column A, I have a list of names and I need to find the names that only show up once or twice but not more than two times. I have tried different variations of =COUNTIF($A:$A,$A2)>2 but it just highlights the first and second entries, even if there are three or more in the list. Is there anything that can be done to work around this?

Excel Facts

Pivot Table Drill Down
Double-click any number in a pivot table to create a new report showing all detail rows that make up that number
How about
Excel Formula:
=COUNTIF($A:$A,$A2)<3

Actually, I just looked again, it is doing the opposite now, so it will highlight the 3rd and so on, but I need to determine which customers have only purchase once or twice from us. If that makes sense.

It cannot highlight the 3rd value, it will highlight any names that occur twice or less.

Your solution was correct, my "Applies to" was off so when you gave me the right answer it still looked wrong. Thank you again for your help!
