I am very new to PowerBI so please excuse how basic this is:

I have a huge data set. One column is called Fruit. Each line is either apple, orange or banana. The other column is called colour and values are either red, green, purple.

I am trying to visualise how many of each type of fruit is each colour but all I can show is the grid but with no numeric values. I know I am missing something simple but can't work out how to get the matrix to show that there are 100 apples that are purple, 20 green and 300 red.

Full disclosure the categories are far less abstract irl but the concept is the same.

Hi Thomas,

As per your example, I build a small Excel table with some random data in it (400 rows):

I have loaded it into PowerBI and created a matrix. The trick is to have "Fruit" in rows, "Colour" in columns and, again, "Colour" in Values. You then need to adjust Values to "Count":

Hope it helps!

Changing the value to count was the simple step I was missing! Thank you so much, you have absolutely made my day. I hope at least it's broken the monotony of early days of lockdown.

Best wishes,

Tom
