Help with extracting results

I am trying to get the results in Column C from A and B

Do you mind explaining the reasoning behind this rather enigmatic question?

First column are selections, second column are results and third column whether the selections won lor lost

I'm very sorry but what are the "X"? Why 1X -> X = W but X2 -> X = L and X2 ->2 = W ?

Got this to work somehow. But it is very arbitrary

=IF(OR(
AND(ISNUMBER(A2), ISNUMBER(B2), A2>=B2), 
ISNUMBER(SEARCH(LEFT(A2, 1), B2)), 
ISNUMBER(SEARCH(RIGHT(A2, 1), B2))), 
"W", "L")

Many thanks for your help, I was OK with the if, or but struggled with the isnumber. This works absolutely fine.

The selections are on football matches,
