Help on a List of Names

I have a list of 300 student names on sheet 1. I need to track each students cumulative number of absences and tardies. How would I set this up?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am not sure if this is the proper way for a reply. If it is thanks for the help looks like I am makeing some progress here. Now I need help with a formula. Something like: COUNTIF('sheet 1"!
A10 is T or A (T=Trady A=Absent)..... if A to ('Sheet 2'! D10 total if T add to Sheet !2 E10 total

I have a spreadsheet that tracks tardy, absences etc. I'm on holdays this week,however I'll search my files and send it when I find it.
