When I click on the '?', the 'Excel help' window opens, but when I type search terms into the text box, and then click on SEARCH, nothing happens. The same happens in WORD. How to regain access to off-line help ?

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
The file I have previously downloaded to check Office dosen't require 365. MS have been removing help files in favour of their new system, so much so that old help files are not supported by the OS

To do a double-check - I looked in my up-to-date Win10 x64 v1809 system, where I was told that 'OS is not configured to support MSOffice2010', so I deleted \Program Files(86)\MSOffice2010\, and re-installed it. When I clicked on '?' in Excel, the right window opened containing the expected text. So while what you say may be true, MS did NOT prevent HELP from working in this other system.
I understand that there is a REPAIR option in RUN ....wiz.cpl - I have lost the precise description and SEARCH has not found it for me.

I have discovered a standalone Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 (SaRA) that does not require Office 365 - have not yet had a chance to test it.

The 'old' help files for Office 2010 still work on Win 10. Perhaps the OP needs to repair the Office installation (via Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair).
