Having trouble with date format--Thanks, Mark

All of a sudden, a cell I had formatted with a date format is returning "00-Jan-00", no matter what date I enter. Also, in the formula bar, the entry is showing with an equal sign before it (=8/26/2002), as if it were a division formula. The cell worked fine until just now. Any ideas on what went blooey?

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
You've selected the "Transition formula entry" option. See the Tools | Options... menu command's Transition tab. As a result you're dividing ((8 by 26) by 2002) and getting
0.000153692461384769 which is a time value in Jan 1900.

You'll need to uncheck this option and re-edit your value.

Thanks, Mark, right on the button, I never would have found that on my own. Any idea how that might have happened? I was nowhere's near Tool/Options. This has happened to me once or twice before, out of the clear blue sky. Annoying as hell.

This option is a worksheet attribute saved with the sheet itself. Perhaps you inherited a worksheet from someone else who routinely uses that setting.

Nope, this is my spreadsheet alone. Only thing I can think of is that I brought it over from Lotus, but doubt that has anything to do with it, since it was working perfectly since I brought it over a month ago, and today decided to bomb. Well, as the French say, "Chalk it up to 'un Glitch de Gates'".
