Google Gadget that opens Excel

I just found this thing that displays various MS Office program icons in the Google Desktop Search bar.

When I click the Excel icon, it launches my Excel 2007 to a blank worksheet immediately. When I open Excel from the regular desktop shortcut icon it takes almost 30 seconds to get to a blank worksheet. When I use the regular desktop icon, Excel runs the virus scan then it blinks a couple of times then finally opens. Do I need to have the virus scan run each time I launch Excel? (rhetorical) Most of my files are self-created. I rarely get Excel files from the outside. And if I do, they would launch Excel with the virus scan.

So, here is my question. Given the choice of using this Google Gadget, if you were me, would you? If not, why?

Thanks

k
