getting a web domain expiring in 8 days

Hi, wondering if anyone has any advice about grabbing a domain from under someone's nose...not maliciously. A domain that's been dormant for 10 years and is used as a parking lot for a few ads is expiring in 8 days and (assuming the owner lets it go) I want to be first in line...but is it really just the luck of the draw? Is there anything I can do to be ready at the first second it's free?

Hi, well no joy. Perhaps the owner had an automatic renew. It was kind of an inside joke anyway.
